Alpha Leadership
Before you start training your gorgeous new Papillon puppy, you firstly need to become the alpha leader of your household.  In dog terms this means becoming the leader of your ‘pack’ (or family).  Once your Papillon puppy sees you in this role then they will be a lot more likely to listen to you – which in turn will make training them a lot easier.  Below are two ways in which you can prove your alpha leadership to your Papillon puppy:

  • By always making sure you walk through doorways before your Papillon puppy.
  • By always eating your own meals before feeding your Papillon puppy.

Patience

Remember, your Papillon puppy is only young and they will not learn everything straight away.  Therefore patience is so important when learning how to train a Papillon puppy.  You may get frustrated at times but try to look past this and think of what you’re working towards – which is having a well-trained and beloved Papillon as your companion.

Start out Easy

It’s best to start with the basics when Papillon puppy training.  For instance, you should start by teaching your Papillon puppy the basic commands:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay

Once your Papillon puppy has learnt these you can then move onto something a little more complicated.

Repeat Everything

Again your Papillon puppy is only little and will not pick up everything immediately.  Therefore you will need to repeat things over and over again.  For example, you will need to repeat the “sit” command numerous times before your Papillon will know exactly what to do.

Consistency
It’s so important to be consistent when learning how to train a Papillon puppy.  As an example you need to be consistent with your rules.  If you choose a rule where your Papillon puppy is not allowed in a certain room, then stand by this.  Do not give in for any reason.  If you do give in then this will only confuse our Papillon puppy and they will not learn the difference between right and wrong.  So try and be consistent through all aspects of Papillon puppy training.

Short Training Sessions

Again, due to your Papillon puppy’s young age, it’s best to keep training sessions short.  Ideally, they should really go for no longer than ten minutes.  However, you can have a few of these shorter training sessions with your Papillon throughout a day.

Reward your Papillon Puppy

A great way to encourage your Papillon puppy during training is by using rewards.  There are lots of different things that you can use as rewards including:

  • Praise
  • Cuddles
  • Little doggy food treats
